battery failing?

energizer battery from pep boys purchased 8/03... over the last year, at least, it seemed to lose a bit of charge, like if i parked it at the airport and came back several days later, it would be weak...
now, it's failed three times in the last week, requiring my booster pack. on two occasions, it failed enough to reset the radio.
when i start it in the morning, it's around 8.5-8.7 volts on the alternator. if i drive it around, and turn it off, and start it shortly after, it's up around 10.5 volts, at least upon start-up...
however, if you leave the doors open while loading stuff (groceries, etc.,) and go to start the car, no start, too weak.
the first time it failed, the car had only been sitting 1/2 hour, so i'm not sure of the issue.
battery clamps seem ok, a bit of surface corrosion, but tight.
water levels were a tad low in two cylinders, so i added a bit to bring them even with the others. any instruction on water levels appreciated.
i'm thinking i'll take it in to Pep Boys in the morning, but when i bring it in, it's going to show a 10.5-12 volt charge, but, like failing laptop or cell phone batteries, it will not hold that charge long, especially if you try to do anything with that voltage.
can they verify the health of the battery?
thanks,
aaron
