If it is still coolant in the expansion tank, you probably made it without damaging head and head gasket.
If the coolant was boiled out or leaked out, it is big chances that you damaged the head.
If the car is already heated up and you suddenly loose all coolant in the system, it is only a matter of minutes until damage is done due to the super heating of surfaces.
If the car is cold and cooling system full but no working water pump, you might make it a couple of miles.
