Robert,
You're right: the archives are a priceless treasure trove of good info. I've been driving SAABs for 30+ years and have used saabnet from time to time - but I've never quite run into this type of electrical vexation before. [I take that back: my new '74 99 had a whole series of different catastrophic electrical failures - that the dealer fixed and ultimately traced to a bad ground - all under warranty.] I'm on my third (used) 9000 and love the car for it's driveability and relative reliability.
So I appreciate your helpful hints. Unfortunately, turning on the turn signal and then wiggling the flasher relay at the same time had no effect – in either the R or L directions. Neither did cleaning the relay contacts.
However, I was able to restore the central locks function - and restore both the memory on the ACC and remove the radio buzz most of the time: I noticed, after dropping the fuse box down, that connecting the rightmost mounting tab on the box to the body frame tab (ground?) restored the central locks – crisply and unfailingly. However, when driving around (with the assembly dropped), the alligator clip would reposition/slip and the problems would return. The SAAB Manual wiring diagrams say all these failures are in circuits that get their ground from the left side of electrical distribution box (which I’ve been calling the fuse/relay assembly). So, on remounting the assembly, I inserted an 8" pigtail ground strap (available from Lowe’s for abt $2) between the two mounting brackets – and connected same to the left side ground on the box. Almost everything now appears to be working normally ... but there's still a very low level buzz coming from the area of the EDU/SCC on the dash.
And, of course, except for the turn signals and the hazard warning (the latter never worked). Voltage feeds to the relay are OK from the turn signal, so I suspect the relay has failed. I’ve got a couple more checks to see if the ground to the relay is OK – then if the hazard switch voltage is getting through. Assuming they're OK, next step appears to be to buy a replacement relay. (But this doesn't seem to explain why everything came back fully functional for a few minutes after I jostled the fuse/relay assembly - and then failed again - as I repositioned/jostled it trying to get access to the pins on the undersides of the relay sockets.)
Have any suggestions on how to get a flasher relay quickly for a '97 9000 Aero on a long holiday weekend (my SAAB dealer closes on the weekend and NAPA was no help)?
Paul
PS: Anyone know what the red wire from fuse #17 to pin 22 of the ACC does (besides provide a 12V "hot" B+)? That is, what does the ACC do with it? (My archive searches are coming up empty.)
