...just curious, what's the amount in question?
Basically, though, the cost of the turbo replacement is because it's not really cost effective to try repair a turbo. When a turbo goes, it usually eats up parts of the housing (and some other parts sometimes too) which requires expensive machining and new parts to rectify. For this reason a rebuilt turbo usually costs very nearly as much as a brand new one. You probably save a couple to a few hundred, but you don't cut the cost in half or the like. And it can be tough to find decent used turbos at this late stage in the life of the average 9000.
On very rare occasions one can perform a DIY rebuild of a turbo, but generally these repairs do not hold up for long.
