This is going to be a pretty long post, so if your not in the mood for a long and involved read please don't bother. For the rest of you grease monkeys and "tech heads" please read on. First the basics...
- 1992 9000 Naturally aspirated (non-turbo) Automatic
- Recently rebuilt engine (the rings that were initialy installed during the rebuild were deemed too hard and the engine was stripped back down and SAAB rings were installed)
- All fluids are topped up, all hoses secured, all grounds secured, harness and connectors doubles checked, and all systems seem in working order
Now for the problem; the beast just wont start on it's own. A couple of sputters here and there, usually within the first 2-5 revolutions of the engine, but no luck. I have checked the plugs by grounding them all and cranking the engine; plenty of spark. I have tested the fuel pump and injectors, I have even pulled the fuel rail out (injectors and all) and made sure they were all injecting properly. So far so good. Replaced both the LH ECU and the DI/APC unit, no change in symptoms. Checked the chain timming which was right on the money and made sure that the chain gears were not sheered. Now I am a bit worried about the compression, it's an even 90psi across the board (my compression tester is in good working order). I'm assuming the engine should still start even though the compression is low but I could be wrong. I have figured out that if I remove the fuel pump fuse then crank the the engine until it starts to sputter then with lightning quick speed put the fuse back in, the car will actually start and run, very poorly mind you. Now onto running symptoms. Once I get the car started it idles at an amazingly low 600-700RPM, but it will stay idling. If I mash the gas pedal the engine will die. If I push in on the gas pedal slowly it will raise RPMs up until about 1500-1700RPMs regardless of how far I push in and eventually the engine idles drops down and the engine dies. If I push in on the gas pedal very VERY slowly the RPMs will raise to around 2000-2500 and at this point the engine responds normally; I can goose the engine up into the 5000-5500 range with no problems. I have noticed one other odd anamoly in my many hours spent with this car, there seems to be a large amount of vacuum in the crank case. When I put my hand just over the dipstick tube I can feel the vacuum sucking in. I went ahead and disconnected the large PCV hose from the throttle body and plugged both the holes but got the same result, lots of vacume in the crankcase.
Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers!
