Ignition issue, cranks but no start, urgent

Hi all,
My '97 Aero is having some ignition issues. The mechanical key function is fine, the problem is with the electronics. If i get in the car and turn the key all the way to start, it'll crank all day long, but not always start. Meanwhile ALL dash lights are OFF. If i turn it slowly, and go just to the edge of the firing the starter, the dash lights (sometimes) will come on and i can turn it over and it will fire fine. Basically, I need to mess with it until the dash lights come on, and that can take SEVERAL attempts. What's frustrating is if while messing with it i accidentally fire the starter while the lights are still off it doesn't start but then when I release the starter, the lights come on but then I can't crank it again without turning the key back to where it kills the lights again, and I'm back to ground zero. Argh.

It's been getting worse, after work today I had to play with it for 5 minutes. I know one day I just won't be able to get it to start.

The DI cassette and plugs are all new, otherwise the car runs great. First thought is the ignition switch but I have read up about some "main relay" that can cause similar problems as well. Just looking for some ideas to help narrow it down, because I am going to need to buy the part SOON.
