The fact that you aren't getting dash lights says that it's an electrical power problem - the proper power buses aren't getting powered up. You can crank all you want, but I'll bet the fuel pump and ignition are powered down. Not much good in that.
It could be the main relay. When you turn the key ON, it signal the main relay, which powers up most of the stuff necessary. But given that the problem seems to be associated with messing with the key, I'm hard pressed to say it's the relay's fault. I would assume you have a bad connection in the ignition switch, and it intermittently provides the power to the main relay, and the rest of the car. In your position, I'd pop open the clamshell that covers the switch and do a visiual inspection - see any loose wires? Cracked switch housing? Obvious stuff? If not, I'd still suspect the ignition switch.
