Crawled under the belly of the beast this afternoon. I tried to get a new VR today but no one stocked them....special order, between 35 and 70 bucks!!!! Removed the oil filter and was surprised how good the access was to the voltage regulator from underneath. Sprayed the screws with PB Nutblaster and got a sandwich. Stuck my arm up into the greasy hellhole and unscrewed the two phillips screws and popped the old VR out. Piece of cake. One brush was really short. Both were gooped up by oil and power steering fluid. I sprayed them down with brake cleaner and then electric contact cleaner. The brushes were now freed up. I looked at them and they looked like they should work. I compared the VR to two old used VR's that my buddy had dropped off last night. They both looked well used. One was Bosch, the other wasn't. The VR that I took out of my car wasn't Bosch, either. The Bosch part number on the one my buddy gave me was slightly different than the Saab version. The VR that came off my car has a resistor soldered on the outside terminals of the VR. The ones my buddy gave me did not. His were both off of a mid-80's Jetta that used to eat alternators. Anyhow, I was concerned that the different VR might cause a problem so I reinstalled the original VR after clean-up. Put a new oil filter on and started the car. The battery light almost went out. It was flickering and the voltage was around 11.7 to 11.9 volts. Still no good. Drats! Shut the car down, pull the battery cable and climb under and pull the oil filter off again. Take out the two screws and remove the VR. I decided to gamble and try one of the VW regulators. The one with the longest brushes was the generic one. I cleaned it up a little and installed it. Put the oil filter back on, hooked up the battery cable and started her up. Woo Hoo!!! The light went out almost immediately and the battery voltage popped up to 13.7 V. I think my brushes just got too short and stopped making contact. Hopefully, this car can run another month. Special thanks to all the great Saab websites, like this one, and others for the great technical information.
