Do a search for Aaron Gilbert, and see if you can find his email address. If I recall correctly, he swapped a 1990T long block into his 1987 9000T when his engine developed a piston slap at around 250k. He would be able to tell you if there were any issues.
I have a 1990T, and I think as long as you moved the distributor over to the 1990 engine, you would be OK. Also check the knock sensor. On the DI/APC models it looked like an oil pressure switch with an integral stud. On the earlier turbos, the knock sensor was a round disk with a through hole. The sensor was bolted to the block with the electrical connections on the side of the disk. The sensor is still mounted at the same position on the block. Finally, the 1990 has a crank position sensor under the harmonic balancer that would probably not be needed in the 1988.
Don't forget that any mods to the DI/APC system will be lost, but there are lots of altered APC boxes you can use.
