Depends on the year... Posted by Rod [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Which Transmission Fluid?, Bill L, Thu, 22 Feb 2007 19:00:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Not sure when it changed, but my 95 came from the factory with non-synthetic oil and my wife's 98 came with synthetic. Do not mix the two - apparently this can do some nasty things to your transmission. Also there are two types of Saab synthetic oil - an older type (Saab part no. 8748733) that is what the later 9k's came from the factory with and a newer type (MTF0063 gear oil) that was developed after the 9k's stopped being produced. From my reading on this board, the newer type is preferred, but requires a complete flush of the old fluid because the two are not compatible.
I replaced like with like - on my 95 I used the specified dino oil and on the 98 the "old" Saab synthetic (purchased from eEuroparts), because I didn't want to go through the extra work of ensuring all of the old oil was totally flushed from the system.
Search on the bulletin board and you will get more specific informaiton than I have given you.
