I was lucky and it was my my fan, the car would do just fine then while stopped in traffic the temp shot up to the red. i thought for sure it was a stuck thermostat, but turns out the fan was not working. I would first verify the fans work, turn on your A/C and make sure the one works (low speed) and let the car sit on idle and watch the temps, at about 1/2 on the gauge the high speed or passanger side fan should kick on. if not it is a common problem inthe 9000's the wire harness goes bad it is a very easy fix but you need to find the right wire. on the drivers side near the bottom of the radiator is a big round plug this is where it looses connection, I just cut my wire and added a new one to the fan, if you confirm this is the problem let me know and I will take a look as to what wire it is. their is a bunch of them, but if yoyu look at the plug at the fan you can then find it again in the main harness if you have a few minutes.. you can first just use a jumper wire to your battery to confirm the fan works.

if your Fan is working then replace the thermostat. I highly doubht it is the head gasket, but if the fan works, then as stated above check plugs replace thermostat etc...
