I understand that K&N filters require oiling with a special oil? This oil has been implicated in fouling of BMW air mass meters for some models, which is why you're seeing fewer uses of K&Ns in those cars too.
Lots of tests have conclusively shown that traditional (albeit high-quality) paper gaskets have better filtration than the K&N, but at the expense of greater air restriction. Improved air flow seems to be the thing a lot of people cite in their choice of a K&N filter. I had always assumed the sought-after advantage of the K&N in a Saab was improved spoolup of the turbo.
I think a lot of K&N's popularity is due to the current vogue of "tuning" puny Honda engines, which is why I expect to see a decrease in their popularity as some other automotive trend becomes popular. No doubt you'll still see K&Ns in use but I think a lot of people really don't know the ins and outs of them, other than that lots of people are using them right now.
I'm not saying this to impugn your choice, Street, just wanting to offer the perspective I've heard in case these issues were not known to you.
