I have a 1996 9000 CS that has had a central locking system problem for over two years that no SAAB dealer seems able to fix.
The central locking system only works about 50% of the time. When it works, if you lock the driver door or passenger door with the key, all the other locks automatically lock at the same time, as the system was designed. When it DOESN'T work, if you lock the driver door or passenger door lock with the key, only the door that you are locking with the key locks, all the other doors stay unlocked, and you have to go around and lock each of the manually (push the inside lock button down), which is a pain when you're in a hurry. The same thing happens when you try to lock the car with the remote - it only works about 50% of the time.

The only correlation that this locking problem seems to have with anything is with the outside temperature. When it's cold, the locking system works fine most of the time. However, after the car has been running for a while and is warmed up, the locking system stops working most of the time. Also, in the summer, the incidence of the system not working increases from 50% to about 90% (because of the hot weather??).

Several different SAAB dealers have been unable to solve this problem, primarily because the locking system usually works correctly when the car is in for service. There has to be a "black box" somewhere that controls the central locking system, right? I think that something is wrong in this "black box," and that it should be replaced. However, the SAAB dealers have been reluctant to just replace the box without any proof that it is the cause of the problem. One SAAB service mechanic said that the same problem can be caused by one of the door locks being faulty. However, since they can't seem to get the locking system to malfunction while the car is in for service, they won't do anything to try to fix it.

My questions are:

1) Is there a "black box" that controls the central locking system? Where is it located in a '96 9000CS? And does anyone have any idea whether replacing it would solve this problem?

2) Has anyone on this board had a similar problem with the central locking system, and, if so, what was done to solve this problem?

As I said, I have been living with this problem for over two years and it has become very frustrating, so any ideas you may have on this will be greatly appreciated.
