Andy....just get another starter before it leaves you 100% stranded. My base model '92 acted the same way. About a week later, it stopped starting completely. From the first hiccup to total being totally dead was 2-3 months.
I had a GMC Typhoon that wouldn't start when hot, but the trigger wire for the solenoid that ran from the ignition switch ran directly between the block and the turbo downpipe. It would get hot, the resistance would go up, current-carrying capacity would go down, and the wire would not be able to pass enough current to trigger the solenoid until it cooled off.
Our cars have the starter and exhaust on complete opposite sides of the motor, so I wouldn't look to this being the issue. Just get another starter....or park on a hill if you have a standard!
