There is a website somewhere that did some pretty impressive testing on a couple of off the shelf octane boosters, as well as toluene and a couple of others. There was one brand that did actually raise the octane 1-3 full octane numbers, depending on starting octane of the gas. All brands are NOT the same, because although they use the same additive, they don't use it in equal amounts. The name of the brand escapes me, but it's the one that has "off-road formula" and "street formula", etc. (Note than 1 octane "point" is actually 0.1 octane, which is probably how so many brands get away with claiming a 3-5 point increase)
It's true that the ECU won't increase performance past a certain point, but that point is certainly beyond 91 octane, which is all that is commonly available in a lot of places. Afterall, the Aero specifies a MINIMUM of 93 octane.
