I should parse my message more carefully. My point in all this is not to say "throw out the bounce test entirely."
There are many, many 91-93 model year cars whose tachs normally don't even twitch at startup. That means no movement whatsoever, of any kind, until the car starts. I have seen many, not just the three in our fleet at the time.
This means, potentially, that some folks may depend on the bounce test to replace the CPS when in fact their problem could lie elsewhere.
The mere fact that the bounce test may not work for a proportion of cars out there makes it an invalid test, at least in those cases.
On the other hand, if you can be sure that your tach USED to bounce and now does not, then consider it valid.
Sorry. Should have been more clear.
But, you can see my concern: if you DON'T know that your tach normally moves while cranking, I want to see people go a little farther before digging in and replacing the CPS. It's an expensive part, and a pain to get at, and it's obviously frustrating to go through all that and have the starting problem remain!
