Thanks Burt and Ray still no luck; might see if removing O2 helps on the downpipe. The thing is for me it would probably be easier to cut out the cat and put it back in, but that sure would be a hack job-- and I'm guessing a very weak spot for future problems: the join between the front of the catalytic and the downpipe.
I'm not sure but it looks like the transmission had been off once before because I think there's at least one bolt missing. At first I thought it was just on the guard, but on further inspection it looks like an engine-trans bolt. Weird. I just can't see putting any more money into it at this point. So I think it will have to sit for awhile. Unfortunately I can't keep my friends 2 ton engine hoist indefinitely.
