After replacing 3 front bearings in the past 3 months (on 1 car) I'd venture to guess that whoever last tightened it never hit the ~200 ft-lbs of torque, but maybe I'm biased on account of the doubt I've recently having on my own workmanship :)
It happened to me on a toyota years ago before I knew how tight to make them. New bearing lasted about 4000 miles
I agree with Craig that you're fine for your trip even it starts to groan you might lose 2-3 mpg, just don't be surprised if it doesn't live a long life. You might be lucky
