i did mine a while ago, drilled 6 2" holes all around it and removed the snorkel. sound did increase, but not dramatically.
one reason is that it's enclosed in the fender, surrounded by either metal or plastic.
i am toying with the idea of cutting a hole in the bottom of the under chin tray, or in the plastic liner. not sure how much mud and dirt would fill up the fender.
if you're just going for sound, get a cone filter and suck the hot air from after the radiator. performance will suffer, but you'll have more rice.
you could try making bigger holes, with a sharp craft knife and the same drill bit you used originally. connect holes to make bigger holes, etc. this would probably make it a bit louder, and preserve the cold air isolation. a series of small holes just in front of the tire may exclude the bulk of mud, while allowing air in and sound out.
