Airbox mod questions

I have a 95 9000 aero 5 spd and have performed the airbox mod by drilling a bunch of little holes all over the airbox and removing the snorkel. However, I didnt really get a noticeable sound increase!! I would like to be able to hear a little more intake noise, so should i just cut out the entire airbox except for the supports, leaving a lot more open space??
I am wondering if this is the main reason as to why I am not getting much more noise, and would rather do this than try to install a custom cold air intake
Any input is appreciated
Thanks
