1994 9kcs non-turbo...220k mi.
Recently (3mos ago) replaced vr due to non-charging situation. Car ran great (well...great for my car anyways) till a few days ago. During a short drive I noticed that the voltage was abnormally low: the voltage bounced between 10.8 and 10.9 for most of a 3 mile drive before shooting right up to a normal range of 13.4-13.6. For the few days since then the car has been cranking just fine and exhibiting no problems related to driving/starting. What worries me is that the voltage refuses to return to the normal range, and is now around 10.2 starting and 11.0 driving. I am hesitant to blame it on the VR, as it is very new (and IS the bosch unit), plus the voltage is not rapidly dropping while driving like previously. The voltage according to EDU is very slowly declining while being driven, in the neighborhood of 1/10v over a 15minute drive. It almost looks as though it is getting SOME charge from the alternator, because the car has been started at least 10-15 times in the last 72 hours without a noticeable change in cranking time. Could this be a symptom of the green alternator wire corroding? or even the whole alternator itself?
needless to say, i am concerned that my daily-driver and work-vehicle is going to leave me stranded with a dead charging system (naturally, it will happen when i am furthest from home).
thanks again for your help guys, as always it is much appreciated.
