...if you read down the board a bit, you'll see my post about helicoils, wherein my Dad drove the car for a while with NO BELT and thus NO WATER PUMP. Overflow followed!
I think it's unlikely that any serious damage could have been done in such a short time (i.e., warped head) but that's my worst-case worry.
Even in your case, however, I would think these engines tough enough to stand up to the occasional overheating event. But you will certainly want to get the problem fixed, and have the thermostat replaced as a precaution. It may be compromised after extreme temps.
One place you probably should look is said thermostat as Jeff says, and also verify that the car's fan electronics are working properly.
