Coolant tank overflow how big a deal? Posted by kemosaaby [Email] ![]() ![]() |
On our way back from Florida to Michigan we hit a couple of traffic jams. #1 was north of Atlanta and lasted an hour or so. Just sitting and idling.
Temp gauge went to 10:30a and stayed there. Once we got going it went back to 9:00. We stopped in Tennessee for lunch. The fan kicked on and coolant came out the top of the tank/resevoir, I added some water after lunch. Bout 1/3rd of a gallon. All was well til the next day when we hit another jam up and the gauge went up again. When we stopped next we got a bit of a spurt out of the tank but not enough to require adding fluid.
Been reading the site here and looks very useful. Oh this is a 94 9K CSE that we bought a couple months ago. 150k miles. Has a replacement used engine and trans and seems to run fine. We had the water pump replaced shortly before we left. Nother story nother traffic jam. There's a pattern here I think. Anyway, other than that car's been running fine. Gauge will rise at idle. I did manage to drop the hub off the Compressor somewhere prior to our trip. Best I can tell everything else is OK but there's no way the clutch will engage. So, I'm guessing the low speed fan won't go on either. Left the AC off for our trip. I'm guessing that installing the low temp fan switch might allow the low speed fan to work with the AC off or not working?
So, I want to correct the overflow and hopefully overheating problem. From the site I'm gathering that having the gauge move around on a 9k is no big surprise. I'm thinking 1st step is to install the lower temperature fan switch from what I've read here. But thought I'd touch base to see bout the overflow. I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks much
