Well it had to happen - after months of watching various RSS feeds online for anything with "Saab" (no good reason - just if something popped up that was interesting) it finally arrived. A listing appeared for another '92 9000 to compliment my current '92 Griffin I bought last year - *and* it was a mere five hundred bucks. I couldn't pass that up - even as a parts donor car for my Griffin.

I was eager to rejoin the Saab ranks since - due to a shoulder injury - last year I gave up my 5 speed 900T that I owned since '94 (about the time I was watching 'RSVP' grow the Saabnet mailing list... great work Scott!). So I bought the Griffin with the automatic last year and fell in love with Saab all over again. The solid feel, the handling, the acceleration, the braking - the overall balance of drivability is just perfect. People who have ridden with me are shocked when I tell them it's a 4 cylinder that gets 22 mpg mixed driving (when driven "nicely"). Since the engine has plenty of near instant power & is so smooth (thanks in part to those balance shafts) most folks think I have a V-6.

This recent acquisition is a '92 9000 5-speed pre-aero model with the SPG 3-spoke rims and many fairly new parts. Trouble is - some kid punched out the driver's door lock in a theft attempt so the lock does not work (and hence the alarm won't disengage when replacing the battery). No complaints - that's one of the reasons the car was so cheap. It was a tow-home-on-a-trailer situation but it was well worth it.

Initially I bought it for parts but given the relatively minimal repairs needed I think I am going to attempt to fix her up. Now that my shoulder is somewhat healed, I am itching to drive a stick again! A driver's seat cover from SaabStuff and a few replacement trim parts from the local wrecking yard. Then a good look over by the pros at Scanwest in Seattle and I think she'll be as good as new.

So - a few questions.

(1) I have been looking for a Haynes manual for the 9000 and the local auto parts places say none exist, however I have found a few UK versions on Amazon. What is the preferred repair book for the collective out there, and where does one purchase said book? I want to stay away from Chilton - I have never been impressed with them.

(2) I have to take apart the driver's door handle and repair the lock (or get a new cylinder to match the current key set. Has anyone else done that repair? And how hard was it? It looks fairly easy but I fear the parts are going to be a dealer-only item.

Meanwhile - I look forward to driving the new '92 hatch back shortly. If I could put up photo links I would but understandably links are verboten here.

Happy Saabing!!
