I'd start with the AC relay. It's typical that the contact build up a little carbon, which increases the resistance. This increased resistance get warm when the current goes through, which increases the resistance more. Eventually the resistance is so high that there isn't enough current to pull in the AC clutch. It keeps 'warm' because the AC system keeps trying to turn the clutch on. So the AC starts out working, then stops.
Instead of replacing the relay, just pull it out, pop off the case, and clean the contacts with some fine sandpaper or an emery board. Nothing drastic, just knock off the big bits. If that works, great.
If it isn't the relay, it could be either the system is freezing up and the anti-freeze switch is kicking in, or the system isn't freezing up but the anti-freeze switch is bad.
