As the others have mentioned, if it's a relatively quiet, metallic sound, suspect the starter. And the starter is near the middle of the engine. The drive gear hangs up on the flywheel. This typically is worse when the car is cold, and goes away when the car is warm (the gear retracts faster - maybe warm grease?) Yes, you can live with this for a while, but don't wait too long. That gear rides on the flywheel. If you chew up the flywheel, replacing the starter is cheap.
A sign the main pulley (aka Harmonic Balancer) is failing is a squeal from the pulley on cold starts. This would be a short squeal at first, that gets longer and longer as the problem progresses. That would come from the belt end of the engine.
