On most cars the holes on the crank shaft rear flange for the flywheel are through holes. So engine oil can come out of the holes if they are not sealed. Our 9k is of that construction. A few makes the holes for the flywheel are not through holes. It requires a very thick flange in that case. The BMW 540 is like that. Because of the that construction BMW calls for oiling the bolt before tightening rather than using a thread locker.
The thread locker on the 9k flywheel is more for sealing than locking. If you torque the bolt on the flywheel to spec without loctite, it will not come loose. But it will leak oil. I did my first 9000 clutch in 1999 on a 94cs without any thread locker. It held to the day it was wrecked almost three years ago but started to leak small amount of oil a few years after the clutch replacement. That it the only 9k engine I did not apply loctite on the flywheel.
Red loctite works but it is not ideal for the flywheel application IMO. It becomes hard and brittle after being cured. A more compliant thread locker which does not becomes brittle will seal better.
