...is your plugs. Make sure they're the proper NGK plugs, and that they're properly gapped (about .9mm). Old, or out-of-gap plugs are often responsible for seemingly expensive problems.
From there, you can check your idle control valve (AIC) for your idle issue. These often get dirty and stop working properly. A good cleaning with some carb cleaner often does the trick. I think this is a somewhat outside shot for your problems, but have a look anyway.
There could also be fuel issues or a dying DI cassette, but see what your plugs tell you first.
On the CAI, you're right, it will not present an meaningful advantage over the stock system. I personally think a lot of this "tuning" mentality is ultimately going the way of neon-colored wiper blades from the 80s. A passing fad. Why? Sooner or later people are going to start to realize that a 1%-2% gain in horsepower translates to virtually nothing in performance terms, since it's torque that provides acceleration, not horsepower. That itsy-bitsy HP gain translates into an even tinier torque gain. And K&N filters, while providing better airflow, do so at the expense of filtration. So the tradeoff there is not worth the longterm risk to your engine in my opinion. Plus, keeping the car stock means you always know what parts to buy.
