There is foam that acts as a seal between various ducting. My guess is that the foam disintegrated (not uncommon), and blew out the ducts. With that seal gone, the ducting can now suck in fumes from the engine compartment.
You can run the A/C - the only connection between the AC system and the air coming into the cabin is that the air flows over the cooling coils. No connection to anything getting hot. And with all the usual nasty hot smells in the engine compartment, picking out the AC would be tough.
To be safe, open the hood and turn on the AC. Make sure the serpentine belt runs true on all of the pulleys. See that it isn't slipping. As the AC cycles in and out, the outer part of the AC pulley will always spin, but the inner part will either be stationary or spin with the outer pulley (clutch pulling in).
Replacing the foam properly is a pain - you need to pull the heater boxes, which is a lot of work. However, there are some things you can do with Good Old Fashioned Duct Tape. Remove the horizontal plastic cover at the base of the windshield (hood open) - it's held on with about 5 screws. To the driver's side (US cars) you'll see a plastic box that holds the AC condenser and pollen filter - it has a long plastic cover. Sometimes the cover comes off. If you haven't replaced the pollen filter, do so - it can get pretty stinky. Sometimes the latches holding the cover break - if so, sticking it back on with some duct tape is an inelegant but very effective solution. Also look at the heater box at the center - if you see seams that look like they could use sealing, grab the duct tape. You could also start the car, turn the blower fan to High, and see if you can feel where air may be drawn into the system.
