Okay, so about a week ago I met my dad for lunch and found out the radiator fan and the A/C wouldn't work. I found a dirty connection for the temp switch and got the fan working. Then I jumped the pow pressure switch to see of the A/C would run. It did, so I dumped one of my few R12 cans into it. I've been home and I hadn't driven it much. And the next time I drove it(about 2 days later), the A/C wouldn't wouldn't come on. I went out with the set of gauges and sure enough the low pressure side on the compressor read a measley 5 psi. I;m thinking, "Man that's a pretty big leak." So at night time, I get out the UV light and look for dye from a year back when the AC was worked on. Nothing but a small ring going into the condenser, not big enough a leak.
So I take it in to my local AC guy. He takes a look at it and rings me up and finds no leaks as well. So I'm thinking, maybe it needs some more dye in it. So I go ahead and convert it to R134a and have him put some more dye in. When I picked up ther car today I talked to him to see how it was. He said he did a vacuum test for about an hour, and it didn't leak a bit. So he went ahead and put the freon and dye in. He said the pressures at idle were about 35/220 and 40/250 when revved a little. I didn't think these were bad numbers, definately not great, but its 17 yrs old, so I figure the compressors a little worn. So I drive home, the A/C's working about as good as most Saab's A/C's work when its in the low-mid 90's. Then I went and ran some errands about an hour later and the compressor won't even turn on. I don't have any R134a gauges yet, but I'm guessing it'll read low just like before. I didn't see any gratuitous amounts of dye anywhere when I scanned it. So is there something else that would cause this? I'll definately go back and have him take a look again tomorrow, but the last thing I want to do is start throwing parts at a beat up non turbo car.
