I just bought a 1994 Saab 9000 CSE automatic. I believe the voltage regulator brushings have worn down to the point where the alternator is not properly charging the battery. Whenever the voltmeter on the dash drops below 12.5 or 12.6 volts the starter and engine will crank but the car will not turn over. When the battery is fully charged with a trickle charger and/or is aided by an external power source (jump or jump box) and the voltmeter on the dash hits 12.5 or 12.6 WHAM the car magically starts, every single time. QUESTION: Can I replace the voltage regulator without removing the alternator? Two Saab tech heads I have spoken with have said yes, absolutely. Can someone please provide me step by step instructions on how to do this. I would like to avoid the 3 to 4 hour hassle of removing the alternator. I am a novice but I don't mind getting dirty and I beleive there are only two torque screws on the back of the VR that need to be removed. Thanks.
