Is this a US car, or a European car? When you say "P" registration, that is usually how it is referred to in Europe.
With a US car, you don't need the remote to start the car. Unlock the car with the key, and you can start and drive it. European cars have a more 'intense' alarm system which can completely disable the car. But you should be able to lock, unlock, and start the car without ever using the remote, just the key.
IF it is a US car, I can see there might be an issue with a European remote. I'd pick up a US remote on eBay and have the shop program that one in.
If you have a European car, you have troubles. The alarm system is 'married' to the rest of the car, and bypassing it is not a simple issue, if at all possible. Your best bet (your only bet) is to find a Saab dealer, and they will probably also need factory support.
