Thanks for the vote of confidence! Like most other people here I just make it up as I go along, but thanks anyway.
The ECU in an automatic doesn't change base boost (you set the spring tension with the wastegate control rod) but it does delay the opening of the wastegate to allow higher than base boost.
On an auto your year (and mine) maximum boost with a standard engine spec is limited to 0.81 bar compared with 1.0 bar for the manual. It also limits boost for other reasons, either in certain set circumstances like if cruise is set on earlier cars, or if it senses an engine fault or less-than-perfect combustion.
Plenty of other things will be different in the auto mapping (such as the idle speed adjustment which occurs when you shift from neutral into drive) so the ECU isn't just controlling engine performance by changing boost levels, of course.
If an engine improvement such as a 3" exhaust is improving breathing, or you put in better fuel, you'd therefore expect the ECU to react positively. To disgress a little, I did find that base boost had dropped after fitting a JT system and had to bring it back up, but not everyone finds that. On the other hand, some people have experienced a CEL after fitting the JT - that is probably do do with the oxygen sensor and/or its wiring, because the JT is designed for the early to mid-year cars with only one sensor and the cat further back than we have it.
You know as well as I that there are as many attitudes to performance tuning as there are people who post here. For what it's worth, mine as of today is that for most practical purposes, a 200bhp car with a good stage 1 ECU upgrade will do very nicely, and it will be quiet and smooth and unobtrusive. I did what you're proposing on my previous car and it became a bit more "boy-racer" than I likes, though perhaps the fact that I lowered it and all that contributed to the effect :<)
My Forge came off Ebay but it's a current model FMCL007PA with a swivel fitting for the small hose, and a green spring. There are several models that will work, and anything Taliaferro say is right for you probably is. It does make the noise whenever you lift off, and I normalllly trigger gear changes by lifting off slightsly so yes, it does it then too but it's not obtrusive, just nicely positive.
All the best - Bill
