1997 turbo 9k head question

The question is, what year heads will fit the 1997 turbo engine? Will an old n/a head from a 1987 9000s work (meaning will it fit and will the 1997 stock exhaust manifold mate up to it), or will he need to get the newer head?
My father-in-law had a substantial leak in his heater core of his 1997 9000 turbo. Despite that he decided to drive 40 miles and overheat the block, instead of using his brand new from the factory truck (amazing). Now the heater core has been bypassed, but there is pressure in the radiator fluid system and water escaping through the tailpipe (not just steam...liquid water). When you crank the engine and start it up water explodes up from the fluid tank if the cap is not on. The engine runs mild/moderate rough.
So I figure he killed the head gasket or cracked the head or warped the head or all of the above.
If he can use the old parts, great. If not, I need to tell him.
I cannot believe he did this.
