OK, how do I get to my 1987 brake pedal switch?

Saab does some great things. Then they do things that make me wonder if some of the engineers have trisome 21. Case in point:
How does one get to and replace the brake pedal switch, given the steering column snakes around in that area, preventing easy access?
Why in the World would the steering column not be straight, or at least snake over under the hood?
