out of the car. I'm guessing by now you've gotten pretty familiar with all of the bolts with engine in and out of the car.
I really misspoke. What I needed to rebuild was the plastic cover over the back of the alternator. I cracked it when I tried to pop it off in the car. I just melted the plastic to weld it back together. I also popped in new voltage regulator and brush pack.
AeroGuy figures it is a good idea to turn the shaft, presumably at the brushes, and perhaps regrease the bearings. However he really feels the Bosch unit is strong, so rarely needs much other than turning the shaft. Seems to me I've heard of guys on this board pulling the armature out and other stuff, but that is probably more than I want to do, or apparently need to do.
Wish I could do better than $70-80 for the Bosch VR pack. I have heard of guys taking the VR pack apart and soldering in new brushes, but that does not look easy on these units.
Strangely, in 30 yrs of Saab ownership, this is only the second alternator I've worked on, and the first was in a '74 99. Very easy access as I recall.
