I'd recommend a hoist for one reason. When you pick up the tranny from the eye hook, it balances such that its almost perfectly lined up with the motor. When I used a floor jack, I had a difficult time getting stuff "clocked" correctly. I just did this in my 1992 a couple weeks back. Hangups I ran into....

1) My 1992 is non-turbo, and has the big intake manifold, which made getting the starter out a pain in the butt. Remove the aquarium cover, and the fake firewall to gain more wrenching room for taking out the starter.

2) I ended up removing the two 10mm nuts on the shift coupler since I couldn't get enough room to swing a hammer to remove the tapered pin. I separated the coupler instead of removing it from the shaft.

3) MAKE SURE you use the correct size torx bit when removing the (3) bolts that hold the slave cylinder in place!!!! There are many horror stories of guys stripping out these bolts. I believe it was a T30, but make sure you use the largest you can. Place the bit on the bolt head and use a hammer to tap it into place, making 100% sure its seated completely into the bolt head before trying to remove. Mine came apart very easily, but others have not.

4) This is tough to describe. I had a VERY tough time getting the splines on the passengers side inner driver to line up with the splines on the intermediate shaft that runs across the back of the motor. The tranny wouldn't slide in place unless the splines lined up, so with the tranny hanging and my dad guiding it, I laid under the car and turned the passengers wheel a little while he slid the tranny into place. When I could JUST start to feel the splines engage, I'd turn the wheel back and forth to make sure I had them lined up correctly, and once they were, it slid together nicely. Before that, I had a real bear trying to do it by myself. Hopefully you have better luck.

Other than that, get a good set of jackstands, drop the subframe and have at it.....its one of those jobs that everyone should do once in their life.
