It's all about the volts Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Charging problems, Abbas, Sun, 26 Aug 2007 16:38:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Measuring voltage will help a lot.
Here is a question - when you turn the key to ON, you get the dash lights (ABS, BAT, etc.). When you turn the key to START - do the lights stay on? Do they dim? Do they go out?
If they stay on, and don't even dim, then power isn't making it to the starter. That could be due to a bad connection on the ignition switch, or a bad connection to the starter. It's unlikely you fried the starter, and that has nothing to do with the battery charge.
If the lights go out when you go to Start, my first suspicion is still a bad connection to the battery. You replaced the positive lead, but current flow is a complete circuit - a bad ground is just as bad.
If they go dim when you go to start, you may have a bad starter.
I really doubt you damaged the cables. It can happen, but not often. The most likely case is a bad connection - at the battery, to the chassis, etc. Heck, there is a cable from the engine to the chassis right at the upper motor mount - if that is bad, all sorts of interesting things will (and won't) happen.
I suggest you do the voltage checks recommeded in the previous post. And while you're at it, measure the voltage difference between the engine block (any large bit of metal on the engine) and the chassis. that should be less than 0.1 volts, preferably a lot less.
