60K Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: serp belts and pulleys, Montana Tom ![]() ![]() |
As the others have said- idler and tensioner pulleys at 60K, and if the belt is off, I put on a new one. If the old belt is in good shape, I toss it in the trunk Just In Case.
As to the tensioner shock, I do a visual inspection BEFORE taking things off. Start the car and look at the tensioner pulley. It will jiggle a little, but not a lot. No more than about 1/8 inch or so. Wait for the AC to kick on. You'll see the pulley move to a new location as the extra load kicks in. The pulley should move to the new spot quickly and resume the same jiggle. No overshoots, or rocking back and forth until it settles down. Just like a good shock on a car. When the AC kicks back off, same thing. If the shock appears to be bouncing around a lot as the load changes, replace it.
While the belt is off, spin the alternator to feel the bearings. It shouldn't feel like it is grinding. Inspect the main pulley - is the rubber in good shape? Any signs of oil leaking from behind the pulley (bad main seal or oil pump O ring). Any drips or signs of drips (dried coolant) under the water pump weep hole? Spin the water pump to check the bearing - again, it shouldn't have play or feel like it is grinding.
It's my belief that the pulleys are good to 75K, but a risk by 90K. I wouldn't want to run the belts out that far (I usually replace the belt every 30K, pulleys every two belts - 60K - but I'm paranoid).
