Odd man out: I did my own. Posted by vtsnaab [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: AC leak and hose repair question, oldsaab, Thu, 27 Sep 2007 23:08:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You can probably fix yours too - high side and all.
Mine works fine and has held all season with daily use.
In the spring I had my indy replace my condensor and when he
was removing one of the stupidly designed aluminium compression
fittings it fell in pieces right then as I watched.
He panicked and apologized massively but it was not his fault.
So the open places got duct taped and I sought a replacement.
All I found were $70-200. No way. Too rich for my blood.
A fellow TSN member had given me a bunch of A/C parts off a
different year 9K, and upon examination the hoses were not the
same configuration as mine, and one had the same end with some
slack to be had and it was already kinked - so I finished that
break, rounded & polished up the open end and got to work....
Used my die grinder to remove the crimp from the broken end of
the old one and made sure the hose was intact.
Gave the bare end of the 'new' piece a liberal coating of Leak
Lock (called 'Blue Goo' by tradesmen...) and jammed that bugger
in, twisting and a'pushin for all I was worth...and it went in
far enough for 3 s/s hose clamps to secure it nice and tight.
Made the compression joint (more blue goo) and vac'd it down
with my crummy venturi driven/compressor powered 'pump', and
shut the valves on the gauges in deep vacuum, and waited...
After an hour it had lost no vac - a true measure of tightness.
Charged it with the new oil and R-134a, and here I am, still
cool enough - and I likes it COLD too.
(Not bad for an ancient car I'd say.)
So it can be done, even by folks in the boonies !
Best Wishes.
