Whats your exprience with BPC's?

Last night i had a big scare, i was coming home from work when i decided to put the pedal down and found that the boost gauge only went to 12:00. I was more than a little upset considering that i had replaced the BPC in April and i can't just through around $250 dollars every day. When i got home i checked all the standard thing we do when we suspect BPC problems. Wastegate pin check, Vac lines check, unplug Elec. Interface from BPC check. Then i did the "long shot move". I took it out and sprayed Liquid Wrench through it and flushed it out with water. It worked! i couldn't believe it. Now I can buy my girlfriend an anniversary present.
I would like to know is any of you have any tricks to keeping these things safe? I would like to do some perfomance mods but not if they break BPC's every six months.
