Fuel Pump Removal 87

My 87 9000 turbo with 267k miles is having fuel problems. I have the pump assembly out and a new pump to put in but I don't know how the metal pump is connected to the large plastic cylinder shape at the bottom. I tried to just twist and pull but it did not easily come out. I can pull harder but I just want to make sure nothing will break. Is pulling the method? Also while it is out, should I connect a 12 v battery to both of the existing pumps (I assume there is a lower one in the black plastic cylinder because wires are going to it). FYI when the car would not start, I connected a test light between spark plug and plug wire and light blinked then while cranking I shot a little staring fluid in intake and it fired up and then continued running on it's own. Thanks for any comments and advise! ToddH
