pull the engine and transmission as one unit. After removing the hood of the car, this is the Cliff Notes of what to do next....

1) Jack up the front of the car, pull both CV shafts.
2) Remove battery and battery box.
3) Unscrew O2 sensor(s) from exhaust downpipe.
4) Disconnect exhaust from the turbo, and mount on the back of the motor.
5) Disconnect the radiator, intercooler and heater core hoses.
6) Remove aquarium cover, and disconnect large electrical connector going to the engine.
7) Unbolt power steering pump from the block, and unbolt A/C compressor.
8) Unbolt positive battery cable from alternator and starter.
9) Disconnect throttle & shifter cables, and fuel lines etc. on the intake.
10) Disconnect upper motor mount and remove alternator.
11) Unbolt front mount bolt, rear mount bolt and tranny mount bolt.
12) Remove negative battery cable from the transmission.

At this point, you should be able to put a chain on the eyelets and yank both the engine and transmission up out of the engine compartment as one unit (forgive me if I forgot a thing or two). Be cautious of the brake master cylinder and what not down by the transmission; try not to mess anything up pulling the transmission past it all. You'll have about 1/2" room to pull them out the top.

I've found it much easier to take everything out as one unit; it makes it easier to mate the transmission to a new motor, etc. when you have it on the floor in front of you.

If you were just replacing a tranny, leave the motor. If you are replacing a motor, pull both the tranny and motor as one unit.
