That site that bobc links shows impressive results with a foam roller. I think the bulk of the success is due to the application of several coats, with meticulous sanding between, and then the final polishing.
I too have been disappointed in custom car paint colors in rattle cans. I got a couple of cans from an auto body supply store, and it dried poorly, remained sticky for a couple of days, and then never really hardened properly. Years ago, I had some leftover paint in a can from the body shop, and I used a paint sprayer with compressor in my garage to paint a fender. It worked great. No problems with slow drying, and the paint hardened nicely. I think that's the way I'd do it again. The paint sprayer just cost about 20 bucks, and the compressor was too small for the job, but I'd way until it built up a bit of pressure, then spray a bit. Next time, bigger compressor, but you don't need a super fancy spray gun. As the Corvair project shows, wet sanding can really smooth things out.
