Likely the ignition switch - the car stopped just like it had been turned off, right?
You don't need the battery for the car to run. The alternator provides all the power the car needs, and extra to charge the battery.
Simple tests. Key off. Put a meter on the battery. See if you get voltage. If so, a good start. Next, step on the brake pedal. Do the brake lights come on (key still OFF). If so, the battery cables are there and have a half-way decent connection. No brake lights? Check the grounds for the battery and alternator, and the fusable link on the side of the battery.
Brake lights work? Turn the ignition key to ON, but don't start the car. Any lights? If not, I'd suspect the ignition switch. It is easy to replace. The switch itself it bolted to the back of the key cylinder, so you can replace the switch mechanism without having to re-key anything.
