In many ways the 9-5 is to the 9000 what the 9000 is to the classic 900, an evolutionary step. Not all good or bad, just different.
The 9-5 is much more refined, smoother and quieter on the road, just like the 9000 makes the old 900 feel like a go-cart.
Most of the mechanical stuff isn't much different.
Service is in some ways easier on the 9-5, in that you can get the new Saab WIS (workshop information system?) very reasonably, unlike the 9000 which meant buying a set of factory manuals at exorbitant prices.
The heart of the car is computers, they all talk to each other, but there are some things you need a tech 2 to deal with on the 9000.
The 9-5 is a bit more of a marketing thing, a little less space efficient than the 9000, less storage space in the doors and such, and the key is in the center console (stictly marketing), but so what, they're great cars. Don't buy a base model if you want the extra horsepower.
