Successful Heater Core Replacement 1990 Posted by JeffR [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Saturday, I replaced my heater core. I did the job in 2 hours, start to finish! My car is a 1990 CD Turbo. I did not have to remove the wiper arm/assembly. I was able to remove the evaporator housing by twisting it backwards, pulling the outside end up first. I had to keep the wiring harness out of the way to add every micro inch that I needed for clearance. I have no A/C unit on the car, so I removed the tubing/hoses which made removing this a lot easier. The blower motor came right out. Putting it back in was a little tougher because it needs to be aligned just right. Not to mention my back was killing me by then! The fake bulkhead (firewall?) needed a little more attention to be massaged a little where the rubber seals had to fit in the slots on the driver side. I didn't drain the radiator. I had disconnected the heater hoses and bypassed the heater core a couple of months ago when the core went out. No heat for 2 months! So, I only dripped a few drops of antifreeze on the ground when I reattached the hoses to the new heater core. I used a big cup and added some water (didn't have any antifreeze in the garage) into the new heater core. I had heard about a need to burp the system and didn't want any air in the cooling system.
Long story short, I have heat!
