The ECU flags a sensor fault if the sensor reading is out of range. The operating range of the O2 sensor is very narrow, so there are a lot of other faults that could be causing the problem, and they don't have a specific fault code. As an example, run too lean because of a vacuum leak, and you can get an O2 sensor fault.

It would be interesting to know which fault(s) were read - for example, P0130, P0132, P0133? Those can be a few things. P0135? Sensor heater issue - could be the sensor, could be the wiring.

I'd pull the spark plugs and look. Do they look a nice light grey, or do they show very rich (fluffly black) or lean (stark white)? Rich can be a bad FPR; lean is most likley a vacuum leak. Running very rich or very lean is bad for the engine - you'll see it in the spark plugs.

However; if the plugs look decent and the car runs OK, yes, you're fine running with this O2 sensor. The engine will default to a slightly richer mixture, so you might see a minor drop in gas mileage, and the emissions will increase - so global warming will happen that much sooner, and it's all your fault.
The CEL comes on for any emissions- related issue and other engine problems. Find out what the codes are, so you don't end up replacing a part unnecessarily and the problem persists. And look at the plugs - they'll tell you more than any fault code.
