Upper Heater Core Inlet Hose? Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Hose problem...troubling me and i cant figure it out, T.S., Wed, 26 Dec 2007 04:59:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My interpretation of the second picture is that you have a split in the Upper Heater Core Inlet Hose. This hose runs from the center of the cylinder head (on the transmission side of the engine) into the false firewall, and decreases in diameter from about 2" to 1.5" or so very near where it attaches to the engine, before it makes a 90-degree bend towards the rear. If this describes the broken hose, here is an excellent place to get one for $6.19 plus shipping:

If you buy some additional parts and work your bill up to $39, shipping is free. You can try cutting off a piece and reattaching as T.S. suggested, but you will have a problem down the road - this hose is subject to a lot of heat and is a common failure point on 9000s. Another hose to replace while you are at it is the upper radiator hose, same heat issues, costs $7.90:

Replacing the front end of the upper heater hose is obvious, the rear attaches behind the false firewall. To get to it, remove the eight or so screws on the black plastic cover that spans the width of the car under the hood and in fromt of the windshield - be carefull with the windshield washer hose that runs through it. You will now see where the hose attaches to a short piece of plastic hose splice. Remove the end by the cylinder head first, but replace the end behind the false firewall first so you have more flexibility while you are working. You may also want to have some new hose clamps on hand in case the old ones are too corroded to reuse or your car has the kind that do not have worm screw drives (i.e. clamp with a pliers and are not as good).
If the antifreeze has not been changed for years, or at a minimum to replace the fluid that has drained out, I recommend Zerex G-05 which is suitable for use in SAAB 9000s, Mercedes and other cars. Spend the extra dollar over the normal green antifreeze, which is not recommended. A complete replacement will require five quarts, so you will need to buy two gallons. Do a search on how to flush the cooling system or ask.
