CV joints..diassemble&clean or just regrease?

I recently purchased a 1996 9000 Aero, 4-cyl, auto tranny with 125,000 miles. I just noticed both outer CV joint boots are torn. I do not know how long they have been torn. The joints are quiet and make no clicking noises on turns. They seem to have diagonal tears in the boots, as apposed to the typical radial tears from being dried and cracked. My point is that they do not appear to have been wide open to allow a lot of contamination. There is a moderate amount of grease in the vicinity, so it is obvious that grease has escaped and been spewed around. After much research on this forum, I have decided that if I have the original SAAB axle assemblies I would rather rebuild them than take a chance with remanufactured or new aftermarket ones. I will soon be replacing both inner and outer boots. I would much rather remove the old boots and wipe away most of the grease before adding new grease and replacing the boots and clamps, rather than totally disassembling, cleaning in solvent, and then repacking the joints. My question is how do I know how much contamination and/or lack of grease warrants complete overhaul verses just grease and boot replacing?
